There’s increasing movement toward selling something other than hours in the legal profession — but it’s still a ripple rather than a big wave. I believe that will change over time, and I think this may be the year that alternative fees finally “cross the chasm,” in Geoffrey Moore’s terminology. That’s not quite Malcolm Gladwell’s tipping point, but next year…. Maybe. People have been saying “it’s almost here” for years.
